Description
Lighting Instructions: Follow your manufacturer’s instructions according to the grill or smoker that you are using. Maintain airflow by not putting on too many pellets at any one time.
Here’s the simple, reliable way to light Big K smoking pellets, whether you’re using them in a smoker box, pellet tube, tray, or foil pouch. This is based on standard pellet‑lighting guidance and Big K’s own pellet use advice.
Best method (recommended)
Using a blowtorch / gas torch (easiest & most reliable)
- Fill your pellet tube/tray/box with Big K pellets and give it a gentle tap to settle them.
- Apply the flame directly to one end of the pellets.
- Heat until you get a strong flame (usually 20–40 seconds with a torch).
- Let it burn for 5–10 minutes so the pellets establish a deep ember.
- Blow out the flame – you want glowing pellets producing smoke, not a fire.
- Place it into your BBQ or smoker and close the lid.
This produces steady smoke for hours with Big K pellets.
If you don’t have a torch
Charcoal chimney starter (great alternative)
- Put pellets in the chimney (don’t overfill).
- Light newspaper or firelighters underneath (no lighter fluid).
- Wait until the top pellets are fully burning.
- Tip or transfer the glowing pellets into your smoker box or tray.
Works well on gas BBQs and kettles.
Using pellets on a BBQ (not a pellet smoker)
Big K pellets do not go directly on burners.
Use one of these:
- Pellet tube or tray
- Smoker box
- Tightly wrapped foil pouch with small holes
Big K pellets are designed to smoulder, not burn like charcoal.
What not to do
❌ Don’t soak pellets in water (they crumble and won’t light properly)
❌ Don’t use lighter fluid or accelerants on food‑grade pellets
❌ Don’t expect them to light with a normal BBQ lighter alone
🔹 Quick tips for best smoke
- Keep pellets dry (moist pellets struggle to light)
- Open BBQ vents slightly for airflow
- Start smoking when smoke looks thin and blue, not thick white
